Women's Health Q & A
What is included in women’s health?
Women’s health includes regular pelvic and breast exams. Other preventive care includes bone density testing, Pap smears, hormonal testing for women approaching menopause, and understanding your heart disease risk.
Dr. Nama offers all of these screenings as well as regular checkups for blood pressure, cholesterol levels, and glucose levels.
How often should a woman have a pelvic exam?
A yearly women’s wellness exam includes a pelvic exam to check the health of your reproductive organs. Usually, your first exam starts at age 21 but may happen sooner if you’re sexually active or having problems.
In a girl’s teenage years, a women’s wellness exam may include a general physical and discussion of her period and any unusual symptoms and does not usually include a pelvic exam. These early appointments are a good time for Dr. Nama to build a relationship with a patient and help her work through any concerns and questions she may have about her reproductive health.
Dr. Nama can also answer questions about birth control and screen for sexually transmitted diseases in women of any age. As you get older, Dr. Nama can help you manage the transition to menopause and the accompanying symptoms, including hot flashes, night sweats, and sleep disturbances.
What other health conditions should women be concerned with?
Men and women can experience similar health conditions, but they may impact women slightly differently. Conditions for which Dr. Nama may offer slightly different care for women include:
- Heart disease: This is the leading cause of death among women in the United States.
- Stroke: Women have some unique risk factors for stroke, including pregnancy, hormone therapy, and birth control use.
- Urinary tract issues: A shorter urethra puts women at a greater risk of infections and incontinence.
- Osteoporosis: Women are far more likely to develop weakened bones as they age.
Dr. Nama offers screenings and preventive measures to reduce your risk of these conditions. And, if you should develop them, she offers treatment to reduce their severity and complications.
